The Kiri Kiri maximum security custodial centre was in high spirits on Wednesday 22nd of December, 2021 despite the challenging impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and it’s lockdown which restricted activities in the centre.
A non governmental organization Dream Light International Foundation founded by Social and business entrepreneur Delords Austin Amuzie brought enough fun and excitement at the correctional centre as it hosted a talent hunt competition for inmates at the centre.
Over 100 inmates registered and contested to be amongst the top 3 winners in each of the contest categories which are Music (Gospel and Circular), Comedy, Dance, Drama and Poems/Spoken words. About 18 winners emerged from the categories and received cash prizes from the organization. Refreshments were also provided for the hundreds of inmates at the correctional centre.

Special guests at the talent hunt event were Mrs Oluyemi Adetiba-Orija of Headfort Foundation and Headfort Chambers who was selected with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie as the only Nigerians on BBC 100 most inspiring women of 2021. She was one of the judges for the talent hunt competition. Chairman of Dax group, Engr. Nnamdi Unachukwu who encouraged the inmates never to give up despite their current situation, Gospel singer Jackmira inspired the inmates with some of his hit singles, and Super Chef Ogennam Emma Enemchukwu was also in attendance and was also one of the contest judges.
Speaking on the success of the talent hunt, the organizer Delords Austin Amuzie expressed his appreciation to all who made it a success.
Very special appreciation to our Prison Partners. The Deputy Comptroller of Corrections and Officer in charge of The Kiri Kiri Maximum Custodial center DCC Prince Mike Okorie, CSC ALU OGBONNAYA Alu, Founder The 3R Club Correctional center and Chief Psychologist and other officials. Our special guests and team members.
Speaking on his highpoint for the event, he has this to say, “the highpoint of the event for me was when one of the inmates whom I have known since I started being involved in Prison outreaches in 2017, came and with much excitement shared a good news with me, and the good news was that his sentence has been reduced from being on death sentence to life imprisonment and that he’s working towards publishing his 2nd book while in incarceration.
Many people might not see the reason for his excitement for having his sentence reduced from death sentence to life imprisonment, but he knows what it feels like to have the claws of death removed from one’s neck, and that a sight of a prison warder walking into his ward any day no longer means a potential call to the gallows or firing squad.
Freedom is underrated and that’s why crime still prevails in our society today.
